**The Difference Between Pipe and Tube**

Differentiating between pipe and tube assists us in calculating heat losses as the surface area of a pipe or tube is required to perform the calculations. The explanation below will clarify why it is necessary to differentiate between pipe or tube.

The difference between pipe and tube, is how the size is designated.Pipe is designated by a "Nominal Pipe Size" based upon the nominal ID ( inside diameter). Tubing however is designated by the measured OD (outside diameter).

Example: 3/4" pipe has an OD of 1.050" or 26.67mm, while 3/4" tube has an OD of 0.75" or 19.05mm.

Our diameter or circumference calculator is useful when measuring band heaters or calculating the surface area of a cylinder or pipe.
